Fire Service Recruitment FAQs

Below is a list of common questions about recruitment and roles within Fire Services of the UK.

I want to join the fire brigade but there are no jobs in my area.
We have an e mail alert system which is free to sign up for. Click on the box on the left of the home page, fill in a few details and we'll e mail you when a job comes in matching your specification.

What is a retained firefighter?
Retained fire fighters are people who don't work full time in the fire service but are on call in case of emergency. They must live / work within 5 minutes of their station and carry a beeper for when they're called. Retained firefighters are paid a basic salary, plus extra for each call out.

What are the age limits for applying to join the Fire Service
You must be 18 to join the fire service, though you can apply 2 months before your 18th birthday, if there is a vacancy as you would be 18 when service commences. There is no upper age limit and applicants in their 40s are often successful.

I am currently in the armed forces, but am thinking of leaving / have just left / am about to leave.
You will have a natural advantage in that you will be both fit and disciplined, but there is no transfer system. You will have to apply for positions in the normal way as they become vacant. Be aware that you must be available for the testing days during the selection process.

How good does my eyesight have to be?
The quick answer is pretty good! When a vacancy arises, the individual service will indicate its eyesight criteria, and there is some variation between the levels of colour blindness allowable and whether laser surgery is acceptable. But if you have to wear glasses or contact lenses, even occasionally, you will not be considered.
