West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service is a high performing service and like all parts of local government is dealing with a variety of challenges including budget reductions. As such, the service is going through a period of exciting change. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, which includes Resilience and Emergencies for West Sussex County Council (WSCC), serves a population of 870,000 residents, over 2,000km². The County has a blend of light industry, services, tourism and agriculture, and its proximity to London, Gatwick Airport and easy routes to mainland Europe, makes for a diverse socio-economic backdrop.

We are seeking someone who has a strong focus on performance, is able to drive efficiencies and can continue to transform the services we provide to provide best value for money for residents. The Deputy Chief Fire Officer will be expected to work collaboratively, building partnerships and relationships both internally within WSCC and externally. As a member of the WSCC Corporate Management Group, the postholder will develop plans to implement the agreed business strategies for the Council.

The successful applicant will have: broad knowledge of public sector services and experience of having worked at a senior level in a political environment; broad understanding of service delivery models; detailed knowledge and experience of operating in a senior leadership role gained within a Fire and Rescue environment; recent experience of successfully leading the delivery of strategic objectives and transformation in a large complex organisation; and will have experience of/be qualified to take strategic (Gold) command during a major incident/civil emergency.

The postholder will need to live within the County or bordering the County in order to respond to operational incidents in a timely fashion. A relocation package is available to the successful applicant, subject to qualifying terms and conditions.
