Fire Inspector

Crown Premises Inspection GroupFire Inspector

Five vacancies for fire inspectors have arisen in the Crown Premises Inspection Group (CPIG). The posts cover all regions of England and are available on secondment for a planned 36 month term, starting around October 2013.

CPIG fire inspectors are responsible for enforcing the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 in premises owned or occupied by the Crown in England, except MoD sites.

The Post(s)

The vacancies are for fire inspectors based locally (home address or other approved location) in various locations throughout England.

Fire inspectors cover large geographical areas of the country and report to the team manager based in London.

We are looking for people with the right personal skills, qualities and attributes, rather than those in particular roles or grades.

The duties are varied and include:

  • Auditing Crown premises for the purpose of assessing compliance with the Order
  • Acting as lead inspector in respect of one or more Crown bodies;
  • Auditing the departmental fire safety management arrangements of Crown bodies
  • Following up and investigating fire incidents in Crown premises.
  • Taking appropriate enforcement action in accordance with the CPIG Enforcement Policy and the principles of good enforcement set out in the Regulators?? Compliance Code
  • Providing advice and guidance (through meetings and presentations, as necessary) to all stakeholders regarding fire safety in specific premises and Crown premises in general.
  • Liaising with fire and rescue services, other enforcing authorities, statutory bodies and others where joint working is necessary, to promote consistency, and for the purposes of information exchange.
  • Providing general fire safety advice.
  • Completing and updating risk-based forms, and maintaining a record of activity.
  • Formulating reports, drafting letters and notices and providing general support and assistance to the Team Manager.
  • Conditions

Travel within England, including overnight stays, is a feature of working as a fire inspector and candidates will need to confirm their willingness to travel at the time of making their application. As travel to areas where public transport is sometimes either not available or is not practicable, candidates should also be willing to provide their own transport (for which re-imbursement will be made).

Crown fire inspectors operate as peripatetic members and will need to provide a suitable base from which to operate, the location of which must be agreed with the Team Manager. Due to security requirements candidates must successfully complete security vetting as a condition of taking up the post.

These posts provide and an excellent opportunity to work within the unique environment of Crown premises, which range from central government premises of national importance to unique royal palaces of national heritage.

    Candidates

Candidates must have a sound knowledge and interest in fire safety legislation and risk-based enforcement, (including the principles of fire risk assessment) and be able to demonstrate the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to deal with complex fire safety solutions. Candidates must also have excellent interpersonal and organisational skills, be able to work to tight deadlines, work on their own initiative and be a team player. Competence in the use of computers and an understanding of IT based management information systems is necessary as CPIG work in a predominantly paperless office system.

    Further Information

Selection will be undertaken using a structured interview process, and short listed applicants will be advised directly of interview dates. Anyone applying should first ensure their employer is prepared to endorse their application and agree their release.
