Fire Control The First Point of Call....

When someone dials 999 and asks for help from the Fire Service, its not the firefighters who make the first response, its a member of the Fire Control Team.

Have you ever considered being part of that team?

As a member of Fire Control you will deal with a range of emergencies from house fires to road traffic collisions, chemical incidents to industrial emergencies. You will accept calls from the public and other sources and support firefighters at incidents by managing resources and equipment. You will also undertake proactive promotion in home safety awareness and other community based initiatives.

This job is unique and demanding and we will support you every step of the way. You will be given comprehensive, thorough and professional training. Your initial training lasts for six weeks for which you will receive full pay. You will need to absorb a great deal of information and you will be taught the basic skills to undertake the role effectively. After this time you will be assigned to Fire Control where you will be continually assessed for your suitability for the role.

Fire Control provides a service 24 hours a day, every day of the year. You will therefore work a shift system which includes long nights, weekends and public holidays. The starting salary for fire control operators is £18,424 per annum.

With excellent communication skills, you will have previous experience of working within a team and be able to work in a busy, pressurised and dynamic environment. You should be at least 18 years old, computer literate, able to accurately type 35 words per minute and have good colour perception.

Selection Process

You will need to be successful at each stage of the selection process. The different stages are:

  • Application Form
  • Assessment Day including audio dictation and psychometric tests (verbal and non-verbal reasoning)
  • Interview
  • Reference Check
  • Medical Screening
